Questions?
FAQs
What's the difference between hardwood and engineered hardwood?
Solid hardwood is exactly what it sounds like — a solid timber plank, carefully hewn and finished for use in flooring.
Engineered hardwood is still made of genuine timber, but it comprises layers of planks with each layer of grain running perpendicular to the next.
Both are real, genuine wood!
How dusty is the hardwood refinishing process?
New innovations in the refinishing process mean dust created during site-sanded projects is greatly reduced from traditional methods. We use high-end vacuums and dust-collecting machines that practically eliminate dust. Any dust remaining after the sanding process is carefully cleaned by our team, ensuring your home is dust-free at the end of your project.
What's the difference between pre-finished and site sand and finish?
Pre-finished hardwood comes with its color and final finish before installation, while site sanded hardwood is installed in it’s raw state, then finished on site. Site sanded offers the opportunity to identify any flaws or inconsistencies during the finish process, but takes more time to install.
What finishing options do you offer?
We offer traditional on-site sand and finish, pre-finished, and engineered hardwood floors. Beyond that, we offer many stain color and penetrating oils for site-sanded projects, meaning your options are nearly limitless.
In addition, we offer polyurethane finishing in both water- and oil-base, and will guide you depending on your needs and priorities.
Are your floors compatible with radiant heating?
Yes, our floors can be installed with radiant heating systems. We do not install the heating systems, but can help you choose the flooring that is suitable for use with below-floor heating.
How does Oregon's climate affect wood floors and stairs?
Our chilly and damp environment means our hardwoods — both solid and engineered — expand and contract with the weather. With our local expertise and experience working in this environment, we know how to work with our materials to ensure you don’t experience gaps or warping after installation.
Why Are Stairs Important When Remodeling My Home?
Stairs can be one of the most visually prominent features in a home. When well-crafted, they serve as both a design element and a necessary structural part of your home. Upgrading your stairs enhances safety, improves traffic flow, and ties your flooring and trimwork together for a cohesive look throughout your home.
What Types of Stair Designs Can I Choose From?
We offer a range of stair styles, including straight runs, landings, and L- or U-shaped designs, all finished in high-quality hardwood. You can customize treads, risers, trim, and banisters with your choice of wood species, stain, and finish. Whether you prefer a traditional, modern, or rustic look, we’ll help design stairs that fit your space and style.
Do You Offer Eco-Friendly Stair Material Options?
Yes. We use sustainably sourced wood and low-VOC finishes that are safe for your family, pets, and the environment.
What Is the Most Budget-Friendly Stair Option?
Engineered hardwood treads can offer the look and durability of solid hardwood at a range of price points. During your consultation, we’ll work with you to recommend materials that align with your budget and design preferences.
Can You Repair Scratches or Dents in Hardwood Stairs?
Yes. We offer hardwood stair refinishing and repair services. Whether you’re dealing with surface scratches, dents, or general wear, our team can restore your stairs to their original condition using expert repair and refinishing techniques.
Are Hardwood Stairs Better Than Carpeted Stairs?
Hardwood stairs are more durable, easier to clean, and longer-lasting than carpet. They also offer a timeless look that fits a wide range of interior styles. If you prefer added softness, you can always incorporate a runner without losing the benefits of a hardwood base.
Can Nehalem Bay Hardwoods Help with Stair Design Decisions?
Yes. From tread styles and wood species to handrail profiles and stain colors, we’ll guide you through the design process to select stairs that complement your space and achieve your design goals.
What Happens If I Have Questions After My Stairs Are Installed?
We’re here to support you long after the installation is complete. If you have questions about maintenance, cleaning, or anything else related to your new stairs, just reach out. We take pride in our ongoing customer care.
Can Treads be Replaced?
In some cases, yes. If the existing structure is sound, we may be able to replace only the stair treads. During your consultation, we’ll assess the current staircase and recommend the best solution for safety, durability, and appearance.
What Are the Steps Involved in the Stair Installation Process?
Consultation & Design: We discuss your goals and review design options.
Site Evaluation: We measure and assess the existing structure and provide you with an estimate for our work.
Installation: We install each piece with precision and care.
Final Finishing and inspection: Inspection and sealing ensure a flawless finish.
Does My New Staircase Come with a Warranty?
Yes. All of our stair installations are backed by a one-year warranty, covering both materials and craftsmanship.
What Areas of My Home Can Benefit from New Stairs?
A main foyer or entryway will benefit from refreshed stairs to welcome visitors and residents into your home. However, any stairs in your home can benefit from new treads, particularly if you are installing new floors.
How Should I Prepare for Stair Installation?
To get ready for your stair installation:
- Clear the area around your staircase.
- Ensure easy access for our crew and materials.
- Let us know about any schedule needs or unique layout considerations in advance.
We’ll provide specific instructions tailored to your project before work begins.
How Long Does Stair Installation Typically Take?
Most stair installations take anywhere from one to three days, depending on the complexity and materials involved. We’ll give you a project timeline during the planning phase so you know exactly what to expect.
Can I Finance My Stair Project with Nehalem Bay Hardwoods?
We do not offer financing options at this time, but we can provide thorough cost estimates so you’ll be fully informed about pricing before you commit to a project.
Will New Stairs Increase the Value of My Home?
Yes. A well-designed, professionally installed, or refinished staircase adds both functional and aesthetic value to your home.
Should I Refinish or Replace My Existing Stairs?
If your current stairs are structurally sound, refinishing can bring them back to life. If yours are creaky, damaged, or don’t meet your style or safety needs, new custom hardwood stairs may be the better investment. We’ll inspect your existing stairs and recommend the right approach.
Can I Stay in My Home During the Stair Installation?
Yes. You can usually remain in your home, though you may need to avoid using the stairs temporarily. We’ll work with you to minimize disruption and keep your home functional during the process.
Do I Need a Permit to Install New Stairs in Oregon?
Permits are required for the repair, replacement, or installation of stairs. For refinishing, a permit is usually not necessary. If one is needed, we’ll guide you through the process and ensure everything is up to code.
When Is the Best Time of Year to Install New Stairs?
Stair installation can happen year-round, but moderate seasons like spring or fall are ideal for working with hardwood. In Oregon’s coastal climate, we take humidity and temperature into account to protect your hardwood materials and ensure proper installation.
