Custom Wood Flooring Process
Our flooring installation process is designed to be seamless, transparent, and tailored to your home. We want you to feel confident every step of the way, from the first consultation to the final walk-through. Here’s what you can expect when working with Nehalem Bay Hardwoods:
1. Consultation & Design
We start by meeting with you to learn about your vision, budget, and style preferences. During this stage, we discuss your lifestyle needs—whether you want a durable option for high-traffic areas, a custom-stained hardwood for a unique look, or an elegant site-finished floor. Our team will walk you through the design possibilities so your floors reflect both your taste and the character of your home.
2. Site Preparation
Before installation begins, we carefully prepare the work area. This includes checking for moisture issues, ensuring subfloors are clean, level, and structurally sound, and taking steps to protect adjacent spaces. We ask that you clear out furniture, rugs, and personal belongings in advance so our crew can get right to work. Proper preparation sets the stage for long-lasting results.
3. Material Selection
Choosing the right hardwood is an important part of the process. We’ll guide you through the differences between pre-finished and site-finished hardwood, engineered hardwood, and custom stains. If we’re refinishing existing floors, we’ll show you stain and finish options to help breathe new life into your space. Our team takes pride in sourcing and recommending the best materials to match both your style and the demands of Oregon’s climate.
4. Professional Installation
Our craftsmen handle every installation with precision and care. We focus on seamless transitions, exact board placement, and a flawless finish that enhances the beauty of your home. Whether we’re laying down new planks, tying in new sections with existing floors, or refinishing worn hardwood, our goal is to deliver results that look stunning and stand the test of time.
5. Final Inspection & Cleanup
When the work is complete, we perform a thorough inspection to ensure your floors meet our high standards. We’ll review the finished project with you, answer any questions, and provide care tips for keeping your hardwood looking its best. Before we leave, our team takes care of cleanup so your home is ready to enjoy with its new look.

Questions?
Flooring Installation FAQs
What's the difference between hardwood and engineered hardwood?
Solid hardwood is exactly what it sounds like — a solid timber plank, carefully hewn and finished for use in flooring.
Engineered hardwood is still made of genuine timber, but it comprises layers of planks with each layer of grain running perpendicular to the next.
Both are real, genuine wood!
How dusty is the hardwood refinishing process?
New innovations in the refinishing process mean dust created during site-sanded projects is greatly reduced from traditional methods. We use high-end vacuums and dust-collecting machines that practically eliminate dust. Any dust remaining after the sanding process is carefully cleaned by our team, ensuring your home is dust-free at the end of your project.
What's the difference between pre-finished and site sand and finish?
Pre-finished hardwood comes with its color and final finish before installation, while site sanded hardwood is installed in it’s raw state, then finished on site. Site sanded offers the opportunity to identify any flaws or inconsistencies during the finish process, but takes more time to install.
What finishing options do you offer?
We offer traditional on-site sand and finish, pre-finished, and engineered hardwood floors. Beyond that, we offer many stain color and penetrating oils for site-sanded projects, meaning your options are nearly limitless.
In addition, we offer polyurethane finishing in both water- and oil-base, and will guide you depending on your needs and priorities.
Are your floors compatible with radiant heating?
Yes, our floors can be installed with radiant heating systems. We do not install the heating systems, but can help you choose the flooring that is suitable for use with below-floor heating.
How does Oregon's climate affect wood floors?
Our chilly and damp environment means our wood floors — both solid and engineered — expand and contract with the weather. With our local expertise and experience working in this environment, we know how to work with our materials to ensure you don’t experience gaps or warping after installation.
Why Is Flooring Important When Remodeling My Home?
Flooring plays a major role in both the design and functionality of your space. Choosing the right materials and style, whether solid hardwood or engineered hardwood, ensures your flooring stands the test of time. High-quality flooring is also one of the most effective ways to increase the value of your home and enhance comfort.
What Types of Flooring Are Available?
Nehalem Bay Hardwoods specializes in custom wood flooring, including solid hardwood and engineered hardwood flooring. These options offer long-term durability, natural beauty, and timeless appeal. We also offer luxury vinyl tile (LVT) in limited cases, typically as a complementary material in areas where wood may not be suitable.
What Is Laminate Flooring?
Laminate flooring is a synthetic product designed to mimic the look of hardwood, made from multiple layers fused together. While it’s budget-friendly and relatively easy to maintain, it doesn’t offer the same warmth, durability, or lifespan as true wood. At Nehalem Bay Hardwoods, we specialize in engineered hardwood flooring and custom wood floors, which are timeless and durable.
What Is Engineered Hardwood Flooring?
Engineered hardwood flooring is made with a top layer of real hardwood over a core of plywood or high-density fiberboard. This construction adds strength and stability, especially in environments with changing humidity, like your home along the Oregon coast. Engineered hardwood offers the appearance of solid wood with added benefits like ease of installation, waterproofing, and more.
What Is Unfinished or Raw Hardwood Flooring?
Raw or unfinished hardwood flooring consists of wooden planks that are sanded, stained, and finished on-site after installation. This option allows for full customization of color, sheen, and finish type, making it ideal for clients seeking a truly personalized look. As a custom hardwood flooring contractor, we offer expert on-site finishing for a handcrafted result that aligns perfectly with your home’s design.
What Is Pre-Finished Hardwood Flooring?
Pre-finished hardwood flooring comes with the stain and protective finish already applied at the factory. This speeds up the installation process and reduces on-site mess and odor. It also offers a consistent, durable finish that’s ready for use right after installation.
Are There Eco-Friendly Flooring Options Available?
Yes. At Nehalem Bay Hardwoods, we prioritize natural, sustainable materials and use low-VOC finishes that are safe for children, pets, and the environment.
What Is the Most Budget-Friendly Flooring Option?
While our focus is on high-quality, long-lasting materials, luxury vinyl tile (LVT) can be a utilitarian solution in certain areas of the home that will be subject to moisture or aggressive wear and tear, like mudrooms, utility rooms, or laundry rooms.
Can You Repair Scratches or Dents in Hardwood Floors?
Yes. Scratches are a natural part of hardwood floors and often add character, showing that your home is truly lived in and loved. Light surface marks can usually be refreshed with repair and refinishing to restore a smooth, beautiful look. Once scratches break through the finish into the raw wood, that’s when our team steps in to provide deeper refinishing solutions. We’ll assess the extent of the damage and recommend the best way to bring your floors back to life.
Is Hardwood Flooring Better Than Carpet?
For most homeowners, hardwood flooring offers more durability, design flexibility, and long-term value than carpet. Wood floors are easier to clean, more resistant to allergens, and tend to last much longer with proper care.
Can Nehalem Bay Hardwoods Help with Flooring Design Decisions?
Absolutely. With decades of local experience, we help clients make informed decisions about wood species, plank width, stain color, and finish options. Whether you’re working with an interior designer or starting from scratch, we provide expert guidance to ensure your custom hardwood flooring complements your home’s style and performs well in the coastal Oregon environment.
What Happens If I Have Questions After Installation?
At Nehalem Bay Hardwoods, our service doesn’t end after installation. We’re always available to answer any questions you may have about care, maintenance, or anything else related to your new floors. Whether you need advice on cleaning or are unsure about how to handle a specific issue, our team is here to support you after your project is complete.
Can New Flooring Be Installed Over Existing Floors?
Engineered hardwood flooring can be installed over existing floors, depending on the condition and type of the current flooring and the method of installation. In limited cases, traditional hardwood flooring can also be installed over existing floors, but it’s not our recommendation for quality and long-term results. Our team will evaluate your current floors to determine whether this approach is suitable, ensuring the best result for both performance and appearance. We specialize in making sure every flooring installation is done right from the start.

Does My New Flooring Come with a Warranty?

What Rooms in My Home Can Benefit from New Flooring?
New floors can enhance almost every room in your home, adding warmth and character to bedrooms, classic functionality to kitchens, and even a waterproof surface for bathrooms if you select engineered hardwood.
How Should I Prepare for Flooring Installation?
To ensure a smooth flooring installation, there are a few simple steps you can take to prepare:
- Clear the Area – Remove any furniture or items from the room where the floors will be installed.
- Ensure Accessibility – Make sure there’s easy access to the areas we’ll be working in, including entryways.
- Secure Pets and Children – If you have pets or small children, it’s best to keep them away from the installation area if you will be present while work is completed.
- Allow Acclimation – If you’re installing custom wood flooring or engineered hardwood, we may need to allow the materials to acclimate to your home’s temperature and humidity before installation.
We’ll guide you through each step to make the process as easy as possible.
How Long Does Flooring Installation Typically Take?
The timeline for flooring installation depends on the size of your project, the type of flooring you’re choosing, and any additional prep work required. Typically, for a standard installation of custom wood floors or engineered hardwood flooring, the process can take anywhere from a few days to a week. We’ll provide you with an accurate timeline during the consultation so you know exactly what to expect.
Will New Flooring Increase the Value of My Home?
Yes, new hardwood floors are an accessible way to increase your home’s value. They provide a timeless, high-end look that appeals to potential buyers. Plus, well-maintained wood floors can last for generations and don’t go out of style, making wood a smart investment over trendier flooring materials.
Can I Stay in My Home During Flooring Installation?
In most cases, you can stay in your home during flooring installation, although it may depend on the scope of the project. For site-finished floors, you may need to leave to avoid the stain and sealers we use. Though eco-friendly, the smell can be irritating to some homeowners. Our team works efficiently and minimizes disruption, but some noise and dust are unavoidable.
