Our Wood Counter & Table Process

Our hardwood countertop and table services are designed to give you a truly custom piece that blends functionality with beauty. From design to installation, every step is handled with care to ensure your new surface is both durable and unique. Here’s what to expect when working with Nehalem Bay Hardwoods:

1. Consultation & Design

We begin by meeting with you to understand your needs, how you plan to use the surface, and the overall design vision for your space. During this stage, we take precise measurements to ensure a perfect fit and discuss design elements such as edge profiles, thickness, and overall style. Whether you want a rustic farmhouse table or a sleek, modern countertop, we’ll shape the design around your goals.

2. Site Preparation

Next, we guide you through selecting the ideal wood species and finish for your project. From native Oregon hardwoods like white oak, Douglas fir, and madrone to other premium options like walnut or maple, we’ll help you choose a material that matches both your design style and the level of durability you need. We’ll also go over finish options to protect the wood while highlighting its natural beauty.

3. Material Selection

Once the design and materials are finalized, our team crafts your piece in our shop. Every countertop and table is built with attention to detail, using precise techniques to highlight the natural grain and ensure structural integrity. This is where your vision becomes a reality—your piece is custom-built to last and designed to fit seamlessly into your home.

4. Professional Installation

Finally, we deliver and install your new surface with care. Our team makes sure your countertop or table is secure, level, and properly fitted into your space. We also provide tips on care and maintenance so you can keep your wood surface looking beautiful for years to come.

5. Final Inspection & Cleanup

When the work is complete, we perform a thorough inspection to ensure your counters and tables meet our high standards. We’ll review the finished project with you, answer any questions, and provide care tips for keeping your hardwood looking its best. Before we leave, our team takes care of cleanup so your home is ready to enjoy with its new look.

Questions?

FAQs

Solid hardwood is exactly what it sounds like — a solid timber plank, carefully hewn and finished for use in flooring.

Engineered hardwood is still made of genuine timber, but it comprises layers of planks with each layer of grain running perpendicular to the next.

Both are real, genuine wood!

New innovations in the refinishing process mean dust created during site-sanded projects is greatly reduced from traditional methods. We use high-end vacuums and dust-collecting machines that practically eliminate dust. Any dust remaining after the sanding process is carefully cleaned by our team, ensuring your home is dust-free at the end of your project.

Pre-finished hardwood comes with its color and final finish before installation, while site sanded hardwood is installed in it’s raw state, then finished on site. Site sanded offers the opportunity to identify any flaws or inconsistencies during the finish process, but takes more time to install.

We offer traditional on-site sand and finish, pre-finished, and engineered hardwood floors. Beyond that, we offer many stain color and penetrating oils for site-sanded projects, meaning your options are nearly limitless.

In addition, we offer polyurethane finishing in both water- and oil-base, and will guide you depending on your needs and priorities.

Yes, our floors can be installed with radiant heating systems. We do not install the heating systems, but can help you choose the flooring that is suitable for use with below-floor heating.

Our chilly and damp environment means our wood floors — both solid and engineered — expand and contract with the weather. With our local expertise and experience working in this environment, we know how to work with our materials to ensure you don’t experience gaps or warping after installation.

Wood counters and stunning custom tables are handcrafted pieces that bring natural warmth, texture, and timeless design to your home. Whether you’re updating a kitchen, creating a workspace, or adding a centerpiece to a dining area, custom woodwork adds a distinct, personalized touch to your home.

We craft a range of custom wood surfaces, including kitchen counters, islands, dining tables, coffee tables, and built-in worktops. Each piece is made from high-quality hardwood, finished to your exact specifications. We offer a variety of wood species, finishes, and edge profiles to suit your space and ideal design.

Yes. We use sustainably sourced wood and low-VOC, non-toxic finishes that are safe for people, pets, and the environment.

While all of our offerings are crafted for durability and beauty, engineered hardwood may provide a more affordable alternative to solid hardwood, depending on your design preferences. We’ll help you select the right materials and finishes to meet your goals while staying within your budget—without sacrificing quality or craftsmanship.

We can provide expert guidance on everything from dimensions and wood species to finishes, edge details, and installation location. Whether you have a clear vision or need help exploring ideas, we’ll work with you to bring your design to life.

If any issues arise after installation, just give us a call. We stand behind our work and offer ongoing support to ensure you’re satisfied with your custom countertop or table. Whether it’s a question about maintenance or a concern about the finish, we’re here to help.

Yes. We offer a one-year warranty for our custom woodwork, covering craftsmanship and installation. Our warranty reflects our commitment to quality and long-term performance.

Ideal spaces include kitchens, dining rooms, home offices, coffee bars, and creative nooks. Wood countertops are not recommended for high-humidity areas like bathrooms. If you’re unsure whether a space is a good fit, we can help you evaluate it.

To help us work efficiently:

  • Clear the area of furniture or items.
  • Ensure easy access to the installation space.
  • Confirm that electrical or appliance adjustments (if any) are ready in advance.

We’ll provide detailed guidance before installation day.

Most installations take a few hours to a full day, depending on the complexity and size of the piece. We’ll discuss this and provide you with a specific timeline during your consultation.

We do not offer financing options at this time, but we can provide thorough cost estimates so you’ll be fully informed about pricing before you commit to a project.

Yes. High-quality custom woodwork is a desirable feature that enhances both functionality and visual appeal. Whether it’s a custom breakfast nook or a beautiful kitchen island, these pieces elevate your space and add lasting value.

If your wood surface is structurally sound and has cosmetic wear, refinishing will restore it to original condition. For surfaces that are damaged, poorly designed, or no longer meet your needs, replacement with a custom piece will be a better choice.

Yes. Our installations are minimally disruptive, and in most cases, you can remain in your home throughout the process.

Generally, no permit is required for countertop installation or built-in tables. If your project involves structural changes or other construction (like electrical or plumbing work), we’ll advise on any permit needs.

Wood surfaces are best installed in moderate humidity conditions, which makes spring and fall ideal. However, with proper preparation, installation can happen year-round.
